The DUFF
For this blog post I
thought I'd switch it up,
so I decided to read the DUFF by Kody Keplinger. Comparing the book and movie
is both easy and hard at the same time because both are so incredibly
different. Although characters remain the same, the majority of the plot from
the movie is completely different to that of the book.
Both the book and movie plot revolve around a high school student called Bianca who discovers that there is a DUFF in every group (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) and that within her trio of friend’s she is it. They both differ after this with the movie which was released in 2015, focusing on how Bianca chooses to remake herself. Whereas the book dives more into mental health and the complex relationships between her and her father, a well as her and Wes.
I think the drastic differences make it more interesting as
its almost as though both pieces are providing two different lives that Bianca
could possibly have led, if there were different people in her life to affect
her decisions such as her dad or the school 'mean girls'.
Overall,
the books representation of Bianca's story is more intense, and delves deeper
into her complex relationship with her father who does not even exist in the
movie, as well as 'darker' themes, that revolve around Bianca’s mental health.
On the other hand from the movie, it is clear that the directors were heavily
focused on their target audience which was 'young adults' which led to them
cutting out the more serious themes that the book explored and instead opting
for a more feel comedic, 'feel good 'vibe'.
Therefore, I'd recommend both book and movie dependant on what you were looking for. if you are more of a serious in depth story line kind of person, still looking for a rom com I would suggest the book but if you want a joyful, comedy and romance I would suggest the movie.
Love your blog.
